Ohio Department of Education and OHSAA Coach Certification

All PAID and VOLUNTEER Coaches are required to obtain a Pupil Activity Permit through the Ohio Department of Education to work with, supervise or coach student‐athletes in Ohio. ALL Paid and Volunteer Coaches are bound by all regulations of the OHSAA.

State of Ohio – Coaching Permits Portal

Coaching or pupil activity permits are required for individuals who will direct, supervise or coach a student activity program that involves athletics, routine or regular physical activity or activities with health and safety considerations. School districts determine which staff members need to have a permit. Those who wish to apply for a permit through the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Educator Licensure must complete the requirements outlined here.

Fundamentals of Coaching Course

This NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching course provides a unique student-centered curriculum for interscholastic teacher/coaches, assisting them in creating a healthy and age-appropriate athletic experience that supports the educational mission of our nation’s schools. Please check with your state association to see if this course complies with your state requirements. Upon purchase, an individual will have access to the course for one year.
